An update on the Aug. 5 hailstorm impact at YYC

Following an assessment of damage caused by the devastating Aug. 5, 2024, hailstorm, The Calgary Airport Authority now anticipates Concourse B at YYC will remain closed for a minimum of 18 months while restoration work is undertaken. The total cost of repairs is not yet known.

Early investigations have shown that Concourse B sustained very significant damage – initially from the golf-ball-sized hail puncturing the roof membrane, and then from the subsequent heavy rainfall entering the building. In the weeks since the storm, we have completed the initial remediation work and are now developing a comprehensive plan to repair the roof and interior of Concourse B.

Unfortunately, we may have water leakage in various parts of the Domestic Terminal Building. We expect this will continue until final roof repairs are completed. Please report any new or continuing leaks in your work areas to the Integrated Operations Centre by emailing aoc@yyc.com.

Despite the closure of YYC’s Concourse B and its gates (gates 31-40), all teams have worked tirelessly to minimize any impact to guests or airport operations while this area remains out of service. While there was some damage to other parts of the terminal, those areas have since been returned to regular operations.

The Authority is working to relocate and provide support for as many YYC business partners impacted by the closure of Concourse B as possible. We will share additional updates as we finalize our plans for restoration work.

We are immensely proud of how YYC Crew and our airport partners responded to what was a very challenging situation. We handled it safely and without injuries. Thank you to all those who have gone above and beyond to ensure our guests and partners can return to the airport safely.

Please note that for the safety of all, Concourse B remains closed to all guests, tenants, partners and employees for the foreseeable future. If you need to access a space in Concourse B, please contact the IOC for instructions.

We ask that you please do not access Concourse B without prior approval.
