Fully vaccinated U.S. citizens and permanent residents can enter Canada for non-essential reasons

Summary: As of Aug. 9, 2021, fully vaccinated U.S. citizens and permanent residents are exempt from hotel quarantine.

The federal government announced a relaxation of U.S. travel restrictions on July 19. Fully vaccinated American citizens and permanent residents travelling for non-essential reasons are no longer required to quarantine, book or stay at a government-authorized hotel or take a COVID-19 test on day eight. Also, fully vaccinated guests will not need to take a post-arrival test unless they have been randomly selected to complete a day 1 COVID-19 molecular test.

 Criteria for fully vaccinated travellers:

  1. Be fully vaccinated (in any country by Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Janssen) with their second dose 14 days or more prior to their arrival.
  2. Enter vaccination records in ArriveCAN app.
  3. Show proof of vaccination records digitally or on paper.
  4. Show proof of a negative PCR pre-departure test result prior to boarding (in either English or French).

Exemptions from quarantine

The above rules also apply to existing qualifying international travellers permitted to travel into Canada for essential reasons and fully vaccinated Canadians and permanent residents.

Foreign nationals travelling for non-essential reasons

There will be a similar approach to International travellers entering Canada for non-essential reasons on Sept. 7, unless otherwise announced by the Government of Canada.

CATSA Temperature checks

As of Aug. 9, Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) screening officers will no longer conduct temperature checks for all passengers and staff going post-security.
