On the last day of Canadian Airports Safety Week (CASW), we’re reinforcing safe workplace practices by sharing some valuable tips on mitigating the impacts of Foreign Object Debris (FOD).
Did you know that if the smallest items of loose debris such as gravel, screws, bolts or a stray baggage lock are sucked in by a jet engine or puncture a tire at high velocity, that it can cause millions of dollars in aircraft damage?
It’s important to be highly cognizant of FOD, both because of possible inadvertent costs; but first and foremost, because of the safety risks it poses to ourselves as airport employees, and our valued guests.
Some of the ways YYC manages FOD and its impacts are through:
- in-depth training,
- diligent removal – FOD walks both prior to aircraft arrival and departures done by ramp crews working the flights,
- regular runway inspections,
- maintenance of aircraft movement surfaces, and
- consistent and clear communication, coordination and teamwork.
Today we will demonstrate that teamwork by joining forces on a FOD walk of our airside aprons and remove any of those left behind items.
