Terminal operations and services restart and recovery
Summary: Re-thinking guest flow and services to meet new travel requirements
Concourse D
As of Sept. 8, guests can exit using D backflow, located across the hall from what used to be Concourse D’s employee entrance and exit. Domestic arriving guests can choose to exit at D onto Departures if they don’t have checked bags and exit the terminal, instead of walking to C backflow to exit the terminal.
Domestic guests arriving in Concourse D who are connecting to the U.S. can exit at D backflow, re-screen at Security E and their checked bags will connect to their next flight. These motion-activated doors reduce the walk time and connection time for guests.
In addition to the backflow, Concourse D is seeing another upgrade to the glass wall adjacent to gate D70 (see image below). It will improve the flow for domestic guests exiting and entering Concourse D.
International to Domestic Connections (ITD)
As of Sept. 8, International to Domestic connections are all back online, in our baggage system and in Canada Border Services Agency’s (CBSA) system. All of WestJet and Air Canada’s international arrivals to their domestic connecting routes are now ITD eligible.
- Fully vaccinated guests: connecting from WestJet to WestJet or their partners, KLM and Delta, to WestJet and Air Canada to Air Canada can stay post-security and not collect their bags.
- Connectors who are partially vaccinated, non-vaccinated and randomly selected for testing: they will exit, pick-up their bags and get tested at International Arrivals. Testing is now provided by Switch who is working closely with the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) and Alberta Health Services (AHS).
- In the next weeks, the connections testing site will be operational at the former C70s gates before guests connect to concourses D, C, B or A for their domestic flight.
In-terminal club cars (golf carts)
We are reassessing where club cars will be available for guests. Due to the complicated and time-consuming international arrivals process, they are currently not available in the Canada Customs Hall.
Guests who haven’t completed the ArriveCAN application are held up the ramps into the hall; which creates congestion and no room for club cars to turn around. However, we will continue to redirect guests to their airline for accessibility assistance.
YYC LINK shuttle trends and its near future
From 7 a.m. – 11 a.m. daily, four to five shuttles are in service during the morning peak. The remainder of the day is on-demand service.
We’re seeing an average of 300 to 500 guests riding the shuttle during the morning peak. Currently, this service is dedicated to guests only. If you receive any question from Team YYC about employee ridership on the LINK, please redirect them to their organization’s leaders for clarification.
Security A
We expect that Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) will reopen Pre-Board Screening (PBS) A by Q4 this year.
White Hat Volunteer Program
After feedback sessions and surveying volunteers this summer, we’ve started conducting pre-trials of volunteer shifts to assess wayfinding needs during the morning peaks from Aug. 23 – Sept. 10.
The full two-week trial we had planned for the upcoming weeks has been postponed due to provincial restrictions in effect Sept. 16. It will eventually test additional areas in-terminal where guests require assistance. The program name, uniform and recruiting processes are currently under review.
