Eyes in the sky to keep drones on the ground across our No Drone Zone

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! Wait, no – that’s a drone in our No Drone Zone!

While they might look small and harmless, unauthorized drones near airports can cause serious disruptions and even danger. Just one drone sighting can shut down runways, delay flights or divert aircraft.

YYC Calgary International Airport and YBW Springbank Airport are strict ‘No Drone Zones.’ This means drones are prohibited within 3.5 nautical miles – or 6.5 kilometres of the airport centre, and 1 nautical mile (1.8 kilometres) of any heliport. Unauthorized drone activity is not only unsafe, but illegal with fines of up to $3,000 or possible jail time.

That’s why we’re asking you to be our extra eyes and ears on the ground, and See Something, Say Something if you spot suspected drone activity in our No Drone Zones. Here’s some things to watch for:

  • Small flying objects (even hobby drones) around the airport campus
  • Someone operating a drone controller (usually similar to video game or remote control car controllers)
  • Unusual buzzing or hovering from above

Reports of unauthorized drone activity can be reported to the CPS non-emergency line at (403) 266-1234. To learn more about Transport Canada’s regulations and municipal bylaws, visit www.tc.canada.ca or www.calgary.ca/bylaws/drones-in-parks

Thanks for helping us keep our airports a no-fly zone for drones, and a safe zone for all who work, travel and live in our communities.
